MoneyWell App Reviews

Nice program, if it worked

It would be nice if it didnt crash every time I try to open it. I am hoping there will be a bug fix soon so I can start using the program. I have used the previous version and liked it; I especially liked that it didnt crash every time I went to open it.

Lacking a big feature… but if added I would give it a 5

I like this software… but it is lacking a calendar and alert for bills or payments due in the future. The alarm button is not enough… I want to see on a calendar and/or on a list of all upcoming bills or payments…. That is super important to budgeting software. My other request is I would like to be able to add icons to the buckets and accounts to make it more easy to spot and for the estetics of the overall application. Also setting up budgets on this is really confusing… Would like the ability to set aside money from checking account towards a future bill… Where you can use multiple transactions to save…. for instance set aside $5 month for the whole year to pay X…. Then can show an actual checking balance and an amount with the money set aside subtracted from the actual amount… Finally when you attach a receipt… it would be nice if you could see the file name of the graphic used to store that receipt…. This software is almost perfect… this would make it perfect…!!!

Digital Envelope System

If youre a fan of Dave Ramsey but didnt like the idea of a physical envelope system then this app will allow you to do it digitally. It syncs with all of your devices so if you have an iphone you will have access to the amount available in your different categories where ever you are. It is hard to get set up initially , but once you do it is really simple.

After MUCH research, this is the best for budgeting.

I absolutely hated V2 when it came out, but the bugs look like theyve been squashed and the app works great. If you are looking for an app to get a good handle on your budget (and do it far more effectively than Quicken, iBank or the others), try this software or YNAB. Both are EXCELLENT products and well supported by their developers. They also comply well with the Dave Ramsey system. Im making this recommendation after researching the heck out of financial apps -- YNAB is an excellent product, but the lack of direct connect just turned out to be a deal killer for me. Moneywell does much of the same thing, but takes the chore out of doing your finances. Buy it; you wont be sorry, and youll change your relationship with money.

not a powerful finance tool

This is a waste of money. The only purpose of this software is to help you budget. Ignore the powerful personal finance stuff they have in the description of the product. If you have ever tried to follow the concept of putting your savings into buckets that is all this will do for you. No great reports no great finance stuff.

Poor Importing

I have been using the desktop version for about a year now. The reason I dont like it is that it does not import my credit union data properly. For 19 out of 20 transactions, it puts the payee in the memo field, and the name of the credit union (Numerica Credit Union) in the payee field. I have to fix that on each transaction. This means that it also does not know which bucket to put the transactions in. It is very tedious to have to fix this on almost all of the transactions that it downloads. I contacted No Thirst Software about the import problem, but they blamed it on my credit union. But I had used Quicken for years and had not had this problem. Then I used Quicken Essentials for a year or two and did not have this problem. Before deciding on MoneyWell, I tried iBank and did not have this problem. (If I recall, iBank actually lets you adjust the import template.) I think the only reason I finally decided on Moneywell is that it was a little cheaper, but now I wish I had gone with iBank. The other thing that makes the import screen more tedious to use than others is that you have to clear transactions with a pull-down menu, rather than a checkbox. And once clear with the "reconciled" choice, you can not make changes without first changing "reconciled" to something else -- including information in the Memo field. I also bought the Moneywell app, but have not tried it. After reading some of the other reviews, it seems like a good app so maybe I should give it a try.

The old version worked. This one doesnt

I liked Moneywell so well when I first got it that I recommended it to my husband. Sorry I did. Since I updated to the newer version in late 2012 I have had nothing but trouble with it. It keeps crashing. And lately it lost my file completely. I was able to restore to the end of December, 2012, but lost everything Ive done in 2013. Yes, of course I save, all the time. And the website is really useless for finding any help.

Still missing basic features & rough

Im still waiting for the app to be able to tell me what my average monthly spending is in a given category. The Bar and Area Graphs have major usability problems like illegible dates and hidden floating balances at the edge of the window.

disaster

This app is a disaster. Twisted methodology, which has nothing to do with common sense. Complicated, Not intuitive, hard to understand principles. Personal finance apps should simplify life, not complicate beyond reason. I do not reccomend it.

Personal finance made fun!

MoneyWell does pretty much everything I need in a personal finance package. It talks to my bank (direct download) so I dont have to download and import QIF files (though I can if I want to). It keeps me honest about where my money is really going. Its really fun to use and I look forward to downloading my transactions for the day. In a glance I can make sure that Im not spending more on my credit card than I can comfortably pay off each month. The MoneyWell Express companion iOS app just seals the deal. The syncing has worked flawlessly for me and the pair make it really easy to stay on top of my finances. While not a feature I am terribly interested in, the reporting is not very sophisticated, so if youre looking to create complex graphs or reports you should give it a test drive before buying to make sure it suits your needs.

Great strides since 2.0

I dont do any major investing, so I dont use any of the portfolio features, just checking, savings, and credit. The bucket system is a bit confusing at times, but optional. Id like to see some more report options, and setting up a spending plan is still a bit confusing and cumbersome. Moneywell works great as a "digital checkbook". 2.2 is a great good and polish release. Better than any other Mac personal finance program Ive used.

Big fan for 2 years!

This is a great program once you figure out how to use it properly. Moneywell is the only app I use multiple times a day (OSX and iOS express app). My wife and I couldnt be happier. Keeps our budget under control VERY effectively. MW v.2, in my opinion, was a step in a great direction. Keep up the good work No Thirst!

MoneyWell 2.2 is GREAT!!

I have been looking for months maybe even years for a program that would allow me to budget on a weekly basis. Finally I found the program that gives me the flexibility to budget on weekly and/or a monthly basis. I love how you can create a budget, then you have a section to log your actual spending. I am not sure why people are giving this software a bad review, I believe it might be from being so used to the old version. I did spend sometime looking at the videos and playing around with the sample documents for a few hours, but it was well worth the time. The best purchase I have made in regards to financial software. Please give 2.2 a chance, it will blow your mind and help you stay on top of your fiances.

Excellent

Ive tried several different apps and this is by far the best. LOVE IT! Kevin and his crew are top notch at addressing issues. Sync works great.

Current Version is very good!

I have used Moneywell for about a year now. I have found that the newest version works extremely well with my Mac and I sync it to an ipad as well. The syncing has been flawless and the program has been very stable. The only downside that I have for the program is that the reporting features need to be beefed up. I know that reporting is not the ultimate goal for the program, but it sure would be nice to have a more robust set of detailed reports. (I guess Im too used to Quickbooks.) I agree with other reviews that it does take some time to figure out how the process actually works, but in the end, it does make a lot of sense now. Im so glad that there is an alternate to Quicken and that it works like the envelope system. Thanks!

Never install major versions

I have been a Moneywell user for quite a few years now, including participating in beta testing. This is the first app review I have ever written. I have learned for the final time to NEVER install major versions of Moneywell. Its a fine application, but wait for a x.y.z patch release as there is always a high chance of a major bug. With 2.3 it is the inability to fill buckets due to the fill date being in the future and the previous fill period being duplicated, with no current fill period available. This is the cornerstone of the application. I can see on their support website that this problem has already been addressed and presumably submitted to the app store, but this is my point. I believe NoThirstSoftware focuses too much energy on new development like iPad versions and not enough on making sure they produce high quality software. Its good software with nice features but avoid the leading edge. Wait for patch versions with this one.

Budgeting couldn’t be harder!

Tons of features and a million man-hours of work produced a tool that makes budgeting as difficult as I could imagine. It automatically markes scheduled expenses as “Completed” when the scheduled date comes around, and for the life of me, I cannot see how to change a completed item to pending. That feature alone makes my bill-paying time a pain in the butt. The best thing about this application is the companion iOS application. The bucket-filling system is awkward. Sadly, since Quicken refuses to do a iOS companion application, (Don’t say Mint is. It is a companion to a web application, not to Qucken Mac), Moneywell is still the only choice. I just hate the budgeting tool. It is still a decent check register, except for the “Completed” lies it tells!

The Best Keeps Getting Better

The latest version of Moneywell for Mac is an example of how the best personal finance application keeps getting better. If you’re looking for something to get started with budgeting or to replace your current finance app, check out Moneywell. You’ll finally have a budgeting solution that works the way you spend and save.

Best Finance Software our there

I love the bucket system. I have been using it for years managing the amounts to carry over in the buckets via a spreadsheet and a lot of effot. Along comes MoneyWell and all of my concerns and effort is erased. It is simple to use and keeps track of the buckets and the amount to carry over each month automatically. Thank you MoneyWell!!!

Has potential but fails to perform

Downloaded this program with all intentions of using it. I went to set up my accounts and wells fargo worked fine. US Bank wanted me to change passwords and then it still didn’t work. Discover Card couldn’t connect or pull transaction information. 1 for 3 makes this system pointless. After reading the support logs I found that they have had connection issues for a long time but seem to always blame the banks. My mint account has all of these same accounts and pulls fine. It just dosen’t have the functionality I am looking for.. Going to try to get a refund...
